The PlayStation is widely-regarded as the console that brought RPG games to the mainstream, and this appraisal is well deserved. Final Fantasy VIII had a lot to live up to. Its predecessor is regarded as one of the best games of all time, and everyone was expecting VIII to continue that trend. Other influences during this period were text adventures, Multiple-User Dungeons (MUDs) and roguelike games.

For example, I can tell you from my own experience that once I started the game as a guard (pure RPG adventure) and finished as an emperor (RPG+tactics+strategy). While the Action RPG gamer will find this game very repetitive, the fan of the Turn Based style RPG gamer will love it.

These two points have a great meaning, they allow the player to associate himself with a certain character and being in his shoes to go through the situations which are impossible in ordinary life. Dark Cloud 2, Final Fantasy X, the Shin Megami Tensei games and many more deserve recognition, but alas these are also long as hell, so if you had more than 5, when would you ever finish them.

The game was not produced in large quantities but RPG fans love this game because it is fun and historic. Elderscrolls truly stretches the imagination in terms of open world RPG exploration and making a game that will take a long time to finish. There’s no fluff here, and the rebuild of the decades old RPG formula was all for the better, working for the complete and total betterment of the game and hopefully the series.

Bastion Review, The Kid’s Story

Action RPG
It’s not a secret that table RPG games are not so popular as they used to be. However a certain number of amateurs are still fond of them. The game is just as much fun the every other time through as it was the first time through. It has a great story, great sound, and WILL take over your life for a few days if you let it. The characters are original, have many different abilities to use, and have emotions that make playing this game really great.

Blending together the traditional elements of a Japanese RPG with the up-tempo pacing and styling of an action game, Square’s effort to make a dark and cinematically intriguing game was a resounding success. There are many plot twists that include cut scenes involving characters that allow the player to have a “real-time” feel with the story.

There are three races the player character can be: human, elf, and dwarf. I loved this game back in the days on the SNES and the idea to bring the 16-bit Final Fantasies to the GBA made me as happy as can be. This was a game I love to play, but feel goofy loading into my PS2 and sitting down to play.

The gaming market is monstrous. Short of an occasional conversational difference based on your race, there really is not much difference from there based on what the player selected. Newer related Sub-genre’s include the Massively Multiplayer Online RPG, which focuses exclusively on online play with a large number of people, within a persisting and constantly changing world.

There are very few songs that last less than five minutes without repeating so the player never really gets the boring monotonous feeling that usually accompanies games from the SNES. Strange as it may seem but computer games are based just on the table systems and the developers of the former ones don’t aim to overcharge machines with numerous correlations and parameters.

For example, I can tell you from my own experience that once I started the game as a guard (pure RPG adventure) and finished as an emperor (RPG+tactics+strategy). While the Action RPG gamer will find this game very repetitive, the fan of the Turn Based style RPG gamer will love it.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door was a return to the Paper Mario fun they coined in the N64 days, this time around with the RPG elements the game seems to work best with. Originally released in Japan on the Super Famicom, Tactics Ogre is considered a “masterpiece” according to RPGamer.

Bastion Review, The Kid’s Story

Action RPG
If you enjoy indie games, I assume you do because you have no reason not to, Bastion is one of the greatest samples for that. Final Fantasy VIII was an exhilarating experience that has earned its place on this list. Firstly, any RPG is a Role Paying Game, which is supposed to have a character, and a system of his development. The first RPG PC games offered a single player experience. As an experienced soldier, The Kid, I mean we players try to find and save all other survivors among monsters in different parts of the map.

Of course, when Final Fantasy VI is released, I might have to replace this with that one, as we all know that VI is the greatest of them all. In this way the player can really have a different experience by playing repeatedly as different characters and treating party members differently.

On the surface, Dissidia might look like a standard ‘beat ’em up’game, but like most of the games in the series, it’s far deeper than that. But not all the table games have such a disadvantage. Also, with all of the other characters in the game, the stories unfold rather nicely for each character.

The graphics in Xenogears are beautiful look like an anime, and its characters and plot will keep you enthralled for the more than fifty hours it will take you to complete it. The original PlayStation system was one of the best selling consoles of all time but there are many games for the system that are hard to find. These MMORPG games such as the already mentioned World Of Warcraft, almost always require that you pay a monthly fee of roughly $5-30 dollars to play the game, although there have been some exceptions, most famously the Guild Wars series of games which has allowed gamers to play online with no monthly fee.

The newest entry in the hugely popular (in Japan) Tales saga, Symphonia was a huge, fun, well told game. There are always ways to expand the difficulty of the game and make each play through a unique experience. Hailed as one of the best video games of all time, it’s no surprise that Final Fantasy VII sits atop this prestigious list.

Having spent hours of my life in this game and knowing that I can go back whenever I want without fear of being destroyed because of the MMORPG laws of survival (never leave), this is a great pick up and play game in a genre where that almost never exists.
